How To Get Past Round One of A Reality Singing Show Audition
Virtual auditions are here to stay and moving forward, it is probable auditions will be a blend of both virtual and in-person, with virtual acting as the gateway kicking off the audition process.
If you’re asking, “How Do I Get Past Round One Of a Reality Singing Show Competition?”, it’s time to revisit how you’re approaching your audition and start making some important adjustments.
Avoid these most common virtual audition mistakes, so you can stand out amongst the competition, make your best impression, and progress to the next stage of the competition.
3 Virtual Audition Mistakes To Avoid So You Can Stand Out
Virtual Audition Mistake #1: Poor Energy and Enthusiasm
It’s natural to prefer a live, in-person audition, but the reality is, you may not get that opportunity if you’re unable to connect on-camera. Every show is different, but in most cases, you can count on the first round of auditions with casting producers to be online.
If you’re hoping to progress to the next stage of the competition, it’s critical your energy translates virtually through the camera, so you can make a memorable impression.
The number one thing you need to set yourself apart inside your virtual audition is a compelling performance and an authentic connection with the casting producer, so if you struggle on-camera, resolve to improve in this area so you can avoid giving a "boring" audition.
Sounds obvious, right? Of course, you don’t want to be boring. It’s important, however, to keep in mind that whoever is casting the show is seeing hundreds of hopefuls every week and you don’t want your audition to be a snooze fest.
From your song choice to your introduction, take a deep breath, have fun and be sure to bump your personality up a notch. You are auditioning for an entertainment television show and the casting producers want to see that you have the charisma to entertain!
Look into the camera lens and use your full body to convey your energy and show them you’re excited to be there. Don’t hold back!

Virtual Audition Mistake #2: You’re Unprepared
Preparing properly for your virtual audition can make or break your success inside the reality singing show competition. From knowing what to wear, ensuring you and your music can be heard and seen, and anticipating any opening questions or introductions, rest assured that preparation breeds confidence.
When you’re unprepared, it’s easy to come across as insecure, distracted, and unprofessional. The last thing a casting producer wants to do is feel like they are “pulling teeth” to help bring out your best. You want to make it easy for the casting producer to give you the YES versus making it too much work!
Here are a few checklist items to have in place if you want to show up prepared on your reality singing show audition day:
Carve out time prior to your audition to center yourself energetically, so you can deliver a focussed and intentional performance.
Have 2-3 back pocket songs, including at minimum one uptempo song, ready to execute!
Prepare interesting and concise responses that show off your personality to simple introductory questions like “Tell me a little about yourself?” or “What makes you a good fit for this show?” Do not ramble! Concise, compelling, and consistent is key!
Eliminate any distractions that might take the focus away from your audition, including putting your phone in airplane mode and making sure pets (or kids) are out of the frame.
Virtual Audition Mistake #3: Poor Audio and Lighting
When inside your virtual audition, it’s paramount the casting producer can hear and see you. You do not need a fancy studio production or thousand-dollar microphone to produce quality audio and lighting.
In fact, most casting producers explicitly say they want the opposite of “produced.” They simply want to hear your most natural, raw, and authentic voice, so be sure to avoid any sort of sound/vocal manipulation, including audio reverb or filters.
If your phone or laptop camera won’t cut it, consider purchasing an external webcam that can connect to your laptop through USB. I use the Logitech HD 1080p which has excellent clarity and a built-in microphone.
Practice filming your audition for the camera to ensure your audio levels of the music don’t drown out your vocals and be sure your lighting is good and the background is clear of distractions.
