Three Strategies To Fight Overwhelm

You’ve heard the saying before, “start before you’re ready.”

I for one, am a HUGE advocate for starting before you’re ready because I believe it’s easy to have big ideas that live in your head, but much harder to execute them!

That being said, sometimes we start moving on these grand visions without a clear plan or strategy. The candle gets burned on both ends and before you know it, you’ve come face to face with overwhelm and burn out.

If you can relate to this, say AYE!

Below are three indications that you might be biting off more than you can chew and what you can do about it.

three indications you might be biting off more than you can chew & what you can do about it:

Overwhemed? It’s time to kick stress to the curb.

1. You’re Exhausted

Is your common response “I’m tired,” every time someone asks you how you’re doing? Does your body seem to be craving sleep and you can’t seem to catch up? Or perhaps you’re jumping from one call to one meeting to the next, without a break, without the downtime, and most importantly, without YOU TIME!

I can totally relate! I am all too familiar with #1. I am a master at overscheduling myself, or should I say, I WAS a master. Thanks to some coaching, consistency, and resolve, I now keep myself on a pretty strict work/life balance routine that includes power planning, time blocking, and self-care; and my heart, mind, and family get to reap the benefits of it!

Your music career is a long game. Sure, there might be short-term sprints, where you gotta load up, put your head down and GO! But in your everyday life, it’s not sustainable to drag yourself through the mud every day. Start small and identify where and how you can build in some downtime or self-care in your day-to-day.

What is one way you can take care of YOU today?

2. You’re Not Present

Do you find yourself having conversations with people and suddenly your mind is wandering to whether you fed your dog that morning or to all the things you must get done that day?

If you lack focus throughout your day or find yourself either dropping the ball or even forgetting important tasks, it’s quite possible you’re taking on too much right now.

Prioritization is key. You are 100% capable of handling your life and business, which can feel like a lot at times, but the secret is to prioritize your tasks and discern what your “must do”, “should do” and “want to do” items are.

It’s easy to become distracted by the “want to do” items because those are typically fun! It’s the “must do” items that are the priority and also what will move the needle forward the quickest when you focus on them.

Schedule time to identify your monthly priorities at the top of each month. If there’s an overall goal for the quarter, then your monthly goal will support your quarterly goal and your action items should point to this.

3. You’re Stuck

Stick to the Power of Three!

There’s a reason you’re stuck. Information and calendar overload, make it hard to process and focus on what is most important. You think you’re getting ahead by adding more to your plate, but instead, the stress is piling up, which in turn causes you to FREEZE up!

Focus on what is most important.  When identifying your priorities, keep it simple and stick to three. Three is specific, achievable, and realistic and can be applied to annual, quarterly, and monthly goals. For the sake of getting “un-stuck,” I recommend you go month to month.

Once you decide on your three monthly goals, back it out weekly and daily with your top three action items that will get you closer to achieving your monthly priorities.
