Am I Too Old To Audition For a Reality Singing Show Competition and The Truth Behind Several Music Career MYTHS.

If you’re an independent artist who’s ever considered auditioning for a reality singing show, but haven’t taken the plunge yet, what’s holding you back?

Age? You’re no longer in your 20’s, and you think you’ve missed your moment?

Mindset? You’re not sure you’re even good enough to WOW a group like the America’s Got Talent Judges or even get past executive producers to get an opportunity?

I’m not one to believe or declare that reality singing show competitions are for everyone; however, it's never been easier to submit for consideration (after all, it’s virtual folks) and it's clearly a viable path to get your message, music, and voice heard.

In the same way, you should diversify your income streams as an artist, you should also diversify your marketing streams. After all, the goal IS to impact and touch the lives of others through your music, correct?

If that’s the case, what are you actively doing right now in your music career to get your music in front of those who will resonate with it most?

Reality singing show competitions are simply one avenue you can explore to bring your music to potential new fans. It’s also an avenue for other career-building blocks like networking, creating relationships with other singers/songwriters, and honing your performance skills.

I’ve heard it all, but perhaps your concerns align with one of these below:

  1. If You Don't "Make It In Music Your 20’s, You're Washed Up.”

  2. Reality TV Singing Shows are Fake and Scripted

  3. No one actually “makes it” after going on a reality singing show.

Let’s address these misconceptions about reality tv singing shows and offer a different perspective, so you can stop holding back and go all in!

MYTH #1: If You Don't "Make It In Music Your 20’s, You're Washed Up.”

If you believe that you’re too old to pursue a career in music or an opportunity on a reality singing show, this one’s for you!

I was guilty of buying into this hogwash and believed for years that "I missed my opportunity." I may have never said to myself “Brianna, you’re washed up.” but my actions sure showed it.

TWO MYTHS I BELIEVED:

  1. American Idol was my last shot.. (I was in my early twenties when I was a Top 100 finalist on Season 4)

  2. Now That I’m a Mom, my Music Career Is Over.

So how did I show up in life in response to these beliefs? I gave up on singing after my first daughter was born, and told myself, “I’m a mom now, who wants to see a mom dancing/singing on stage?"

I then allowed 5 years to pass before realizing I was emotionally, physically, and spiritually suffering because I was NOT exercising my gifts and talents.

The Truth is, you can have a successful music career at any age! Especially in today’s DIY industry landscape. So make the choice to create a new narrative for yourself.

New script. New rules. Happy Music Career.

MYTH #2: Reality TV Singing Shows are Fake and Scripted

Is this your big fat excuse for not auditioning? Let’s dive in.

Yes, this is entertainment television and there is editing involved.  However, if you go into this experience very clear on the story you’re prepared to share and you are firm in your convictions, you strip away the power from anyone who tries to convince you to say something that is off-brand or off message for you.

The Truth is, you always have a choice on how you are going to respond and act on these shows.

Ultimately when you buy into this belief because you don’t want to be associated with “fake and scripted,” you’re missing out on an opportunity to impact millions with your message and your music. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t say it.

MYTH #3: No one actually “makes it” after going on a reality singing show.

If you’re looking for a fast track to fame or an overnight success plan to stardom, perhaps a reality singing show is not for you.

On the other hand, if you look at this competition as a VEHICLE or platform for you to open up doors, grow your social media following or your fan base, you begin to tap into how one can maximize the reality singing show experience.

Ultimately, it’s not the obligation of the show to create career momentum for you. That responsibility falls on the artist and requires one to do the marketing and strategy work beforehand, in order to leverage the opportunity.

The Truth is, many reality singing show contestants do seem to disappear, never to be heard from again, however, it’s not from a lack of talent.

Contrary, it’s from a lack of knowledge and preparation, because they weren’t privy to the necessary pre-work leading up to their participation on the show. Here’s the good news: you don’t have to make the same mistake. Your experience and success after the show can be different, but you have to implement a clear strategy to make that so!

I cover these strategies inside my book, Make Reality TV Your Reality, and myself along with 20+ other music industry speakers spoke on this inside the Reality Singing Show Summit!
