How A Reality TV Singing Show Can Support Your Music Career Despite These 3 Misconceptions
As a singer, performing artist, and/or seasoned musician, you’ve surely been exposed to the wide and wonderful world of reality singing shows. But, is there something that causes you to pause when it comes down to actually participating in one?
Perhaps as a seasoned musician who’s been around the block a few times, you think to yourself, “Reality Singing Shows Aren’t For REAL Musicians.”
Could a reality singing show be a viable vehicle to promote your music career?
I think yes, but the keyword is PROMOTE.
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it a thousand times, I’m not one to believe or declare that reality singing show competitions are for everyone; however, you can’t deny its ability to get your message, music, and voice heard.
Creating diversified marketing streams to shout from the rooftops that you and your music are well worth the attention, is how you attract and ultimately make your music impact.

I’ve heard it all, but perhaps your concerns align with one of these below:
Reality TV Singing Shows are Fake and Scripted
My Industry Peers Won’t Take Me Seriously If I Go on a Reality Singing Show.
Reality TV Singing Shows are Cruel and Manipulative.
Reality singing show competitions are simply one avenue you can explore to bring your music to potential new fans. It’s also an avenue for other career-building blocks like networking, creating relationships with other singers/songwriters, and honing your performance skills.
Let’s address these misconceptions about reality tv singing shows and offer a different perspective, so you can stop holding back and go all in!
MISCONCEPTION #1: Reality TV Singing Shows are Fake and Scripted
If you’re looking for the “real” on Reality Singing Shows, let’s dive in.
Yes, this is entertainment television and there is editing involved; however, if you go into this experience very clear on the authentic story you’re prepared to share and are firm in your convictions, you strip away the power from anyone who tries to convince you to say something that is off-brand or off message for you.
The Truth is, you CONTROL THE NARRATIVE, But You Must Prepare in advance how you will respond and act on these shows.
Ultimately, remember this is simply an opportunity to impact millions with your message and your music, and if it doesn’t feel right, don’t say it.
MISCONCEPTION #2: My Industry Peers Won’t Take Me Seriously If I Go on a Reality Singing Show.
Is there a stigma amongst working musicians around reality singing shows?
In my conversations with independent artists, I’ve heard several different points of view. Some artists are hung up on the concern they’ll lose respect amongst their music industry peers. Others don’t want to compete with singers or performing artists who “aren’t on the same level.”
This is a no-judgment zone, but if you are an artist who believes reality singing shows are not for “real musicians,” I’d like to pose a question to you:
If you were offered a guaranteed opportunity to get your music and message in front of millions of new ears and eyes, to expand your music impact, would you take it?
It is proven that reality singing shows host a wide range of talent: from the beginner vocalists who are simply excited to be there to the seasoned professionals who’ve been working their craft and gigging for years.
The truth is, reality singing shows are for EVERYONE. It’s an even playing field for all.
If you’re holding back from auditioning for a competition like American Idol or The Voice because “it’s not for real musicians,” you’re limiting the possibilities of your success. At the end of the day, your participation in a show like this is a springboard to create momentum in your music career. It is not the end all be all or the last opportunity you’ll ever have.
Simply put, it’s just another opportunity.
Many serious musicians have not only gone on these shows, but they’ve actually won these shows! And still, even the “real” musicians weren’t prepared to leverage the platform and maximize the experience. It’s the contestants who have a plan and strategy in place, who see success long after the show is behind them.
To be clear, the show does not owe you anything after the fact. Let them off the hook! It is in YOUR power and is YOUR responsibility alone to squeeze the most juice out of your reality singing show experience in order to create maximum momentum in your music career.
MISCONCEPTION #3: REALITY SINGING SHOWS ARE CRUEL & MANIPULATIVE
Not all reality singing shows are created equal.
It’s important to note that every reality singing show is different; however, there are some common negative aspects to these shows to beware of, including, but not limited to manipulation. Unfortunately, as in any business or experience, there are some bad apples out there and not everyone has a positive experience participating in these shows.
Inside my Amazon bestseller, Make Reality TV Your Reality, I interview one of the main editors from American Idol who shed light on many of these concerns and affirmed that the goal of the Producer or Editor of a show is NOT to humiliate and degrade you. On the contrary, he pointed to the fact that when an artist or contestant looks good and experiences success, this bodes well for the show overall.
But consider shifting from a victim mindset and look at how you can approach your reality singing show experience empowered. I believe the very first step is Mindset and Mental Health, which I also touch on inside my online course, The Reality Singing Show Succes Academy. Ultimately, it’s critical to not only focus on being vocally fit, but equally important should be the emphasis on spiritual, emotional, and mental stability going into the show.
The Truth Is, these shows are not a walk in the park and many performing artists are not equipped to handle them.
Keep in mind that once you get cast, your time on the show is limited and will eventually come to end. Oftentimes, this “end” happens before you hope, which leads to disappointment, heartbreak, and rejection. How will you equip yourself to leave the show gracefully and not allow your exit to demean your self-worth?
When you’re mentally and emotionally secure moving into the experience, you can confidently manage your expectations, while staying true to your motivation for auditioning in the first place. Risk accompanies opportunity, and when you empower yourself with knowledge and ground yourself in truth, you can clearly discern whether the “reality singing show machine” is for you, or not.
