Master Your Music Mindset and Crush Your Next Performance

What’s goes through your mind as you prepare your material for an Audition or Performance?

Are you thinking…

“Ugh, I really need a lot of work. My voice is not ready. Can I actually do this?”

“I can’t remember the lyrics. I ALWAYS forget the lyrics! Crap, I’m drawing a blank. I’ll probably just forget them again, so why even bother?”

“Will my performance resonate? Will they like me? Or even more important, will they respect me?”

“Am I even good enough in the first place? What am I doing here? There are a GAZILLION singers out there in the world who are better than I am. I’m such a joke.”

Wherever you’re at on the mindset scale… pause for a moment to recognize that YOU MUST GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD, IF YOU’RE GOING TO GIVE IT YOUR BEST.

Your brain is a POWERFUL tool and you have the power to train your thoughts and actions, in order to get the most of your performance.

Let’s dive into a few of my top Mindset and Focus Tips, so you can knock your Reality Singing Show Performance out of the park!

Tip #1: Don’t Let Your Past, Dictate Your Future

We all have battle scars from what others told us growing up, previous performance mishaps, and life’s traumas. Don’t make the mistake of sweeping them under the rug and ignoring them because “the show must go on.”

Wounds fester when they are not tended to and bringing your A-game to a performance when you’re holding on to past grievances, is like expecting a puppy to not chew up your favorite new pair of shoes or not pee on the brand new couch.

It’s a tall request.

You always have a choice and your past does not equate your future.

Let’s run through a story you might be replaying in your mind:

Growing up your older sibling (cousin, parent, or best friend) vocalized their annoyance with your singing. “Oh my gosh, you’re ALWAYS singing!” Because you admire and respect them, you’re immediately offended and hurt and begin internalizing their comment.

“I guess I’m not that good of a singer. Every time I sing, they get annoyed. Why can’t they just support me?  I know I shouldn’t care what others think, but what if it’s true? If they don’t like my voice, what will others think?”

What a rabbit hole you just took yourself down, but that’s all it took to usher in the self-doubt. You are now partnering with a narrative that in most cases, isn’t even true.

Let’s try on a different perspective for a moment and consider that your sibling, parent or best friend is just going through a bout of their own drama or perhaps they might even be annoyed with themselves because they don’t have a passion that they're fired up about.

At the end of the day, chances are, they are actually extremely proud of you.

Both scenarios equal different results on your psyche. Which one will you choose to believe?

TIP #2:  Lead With Confidence, Not Insecurity

Auditions have a tendency of conjuring up a lot of fear. Real and Imagined.

The Real Stuff:

“What should I expect?” New experiences can be scary.

“What are they looking for?” It’s impossible to know.

“Will I forget my lyrics again?” You might.

The Imagined Stuff:

“They won’t like me, they never like me.”

You sure about that?

“Everyone in the room is staring at me. They hate me already.”

I repeat. You sure about that?

“This venue is cursed. I’ve never had a good performance here.”

Are you really going there?

Fear is normal, but empower yourself to kick serious music butt by choosing to give it all you got, despite your fear. Ultimately, when you continue to put energy into the junk that circles your mind, you feed the beast their favorite meal: a cornucopia of nonsense and B.S.

It is up to you to recognize your detrimental and toxic thoughts (real and imagined), and make a choice to starve them out.

So how can you get your mindset in check?

  1. Start with The Truth
Start by grounding yourself in the truth.  What is the real truth here vs. the story I’m playing in my head?

  2. Avoid Comparison
Inside an audition or competition performance situation, you are there to execute and bring your absolute best. Don’t waste any precious time or energy comparing yourself to the Joe next to you. This depletes focus and pulls your frequency down.

  3. Prepare, prepare, prepare
Confidence is a byproduct of preparation and experience and when you have the knowing that you are capable of slaying your performance and nothing can get in your way, you become a force to be reckoned with.

TIP #3:  Counter The Negative Self-Talk with Positive Affirmations

If you haven’t taken a deep dive into the world of positive affirmations yet, consider this your crash course. Affirmations are a way for us to train our brains and also invite abundance and goodness to come our way.

Living in a state of gratitude, even when life is throwing us lemons puts us in a very powerful state, and affirmations not only help to express gratitude, but they also demonstrate faith and trust in the not yet seen.

Below are a few examples of how we can use positive affirmations to combat the negative chatter in our minds:

THE LIE:

“They won’t like me, they never like me.”

THE TRUTH:

I am very likable and I’m here to give my best.

THE LIE:

“Everyone in the room is staring at me. They hate me already.”

THE TRUTH:

I am a magnet for positive energy, light, and good vibes. People are drawn to me because I have it going on!

THE LIE:

“This venue is cursed. I’ve never had a good performance here.”

THE TRUTH:

I am prepared and focused and have full confidence that I will slay this performance.

Here are a few other affirmations keep in my repertoire:

I AM SECURE

I AM BOLD

I AM CAPABLE

I AM LOVED

I AM POWERFUL

I AM COURAGEOUS

I AM BRAVE

I AM A RISER

Could any of the above help you as you’re preparing for your next performance? Try incorporating positive affirmations in your daily routine for the next week and see how you feel.

Whether it’s more on a “need basis” or integrated as part of your daily success ritual, affirmations are undoubtedly a great way to infuse some pep in your step.
